Information

WHITE WILLOW – Salix alba . Salicaceae family

The White Willow is a tree of the Salicaceae family. This common tree in wetlands throughout Europe and temperate regions is often cultivated for the production of willow. Willow branches provide the wicker. Deciduous leaves, measuring 5 to 12 cm long, very narrow and with a silvery face, the bark of branches aged 2 to 3 years is harvested for medicinal use.

Main components of the plant: Salicylates (1.5 to 11%), flavonic and heteroside derivatives of the salicoside group, salicortin, fragiline, populin, salireposide, tremulacin. Phenolic compounds: triandrin, vimaline and aromatic derivatives, syringic aldehyde saligenin, salicylic acid, para-hydroxybenzoic acid, caffeic acid, ferulic acid, p-coumaric acid. Flavonoids: glycosides of quercetol, luteolin, eriodictyol, naringenin, ampelopsin and isosalipurpuroside. Tannins: dimer and trimer proanthocyanidols (8 to 20%)

White willow, source of natural aspirin:

White willow has derivatives of acetylsalicylic acid, the active ingredient of aspirin. Its properties are almost the same; less powerful, it does not thin the blood and does not irritate the gastric mucosa. White willow has many properties in case of inflammation, pain, fever or infection. Given its content of salicylates, white willow can therefore be recommended in the event of rheumatism, stings, muscle or joint pain, blows and fractures, etc.
